The Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) has slammed circulating social media reports that an investor in the tourism industry is “illegally building a lodge at a breeding ground for wild animals” in the Serengeti National Park.

A statement issued yesterday by the TANAPA communication unit said that an investment company, Well worth Hotels & Lodges Limited, was given a permit to construct a lodge at Lake Magadi in 2015 through a letter with Reference No. TNP/HQ/P.30/17 dated June 4, 2015.

The statement said the investor had completed all the necessary procedures required by TANAPA and the National Environmental Management Council (NEMC) before commencement of the project. The investor was issued with a certificate with Reference No. EC/EIS/2435 dated May 16, 2016, after evaluation of the project’s environmental impact.

“The issuance of the certificate meant that the selected area for the project could be developed without disturbance to its ecological balance,” the statement said.

According to the statement the lodge’s construction began in 2017 continuing to 2018 before being suspended because of the global Covid-19 pandemic.

“TANAPA urges the public to ignore the said reports aimed at tarnishing its image,” the statement concluded.
