Fallen ex-president Mwinyi laid to rest at his Mangapwani home

President Samia Suluhu Hassan today led thousands and thousands of Zanzibaris and foreign dignitaries who thronged the New Amani Sports Complex in Zanzibar town to bid farewell to Tanzanias second president of the United Republic of Tanzania, Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who died on Thursday, February 29.

In her eulogy, President Samia described the departed leader as a political and economic reformer who oversaw the International Monetary Fund-enforced economic reforms and the introduction of plural politics in July 1992 after years of single-party politics.

She also described the late Mwinyi as a fallen baobab tree as he was the pillar of the family as well as the nation because of his elderly wisdom and God-given leadership talents.

Several leaders who attended the ceremony praised Mzee Mwinyi as a uniting factor in the United Republic of Tanzania political scene.

Foreign dignitaries who attended ceremony included Namibian Vice-President Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah and government representative from Burundi and the Comoros.

Mzee Mwinyi was buried at his Mangapwani home village where he grew up before becoming a national figure in Zanzibar and Mainland Tanzania politics.

He was the first man in Tanzanian politics to hold the presidency of the Zanzibar archipelago and the mainland after the 1964 Union spearheaded by Sheikh Abeid Amani Karume and Mwalimu Nyerere.
