The Tanzania Media Women’s Association (TAMWA) аnd the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) have teamed up to launch the Samia Kalamu Awards to promote journalism excellence in the publication of local content.

A statement released yestetday by TAMWA director, Dr Rose Reuben, said the awards will be granted to local journalists to mobilise them for publishing stories or features highliting local events.

The statement said the awards will be a catalyst towards writing well-researched and well-analysed features on development issues, accountability and publications that enhance the country’s image.

The awards will be based on stories and features published in newspapers, radio, television and social media platforms.

Technological advancements and globalisation have seen Tanzanian media concentrating more on entertainment news while educative features receive little attention.

“Many media organs place much emphasis on foreign content at the expense local content. It’s in this context that TAMWA and TCRA have organised trsining courses to journalists, broadcasters, editors, managers, information officets, media owners, and social media content creators whereby 2,054 trainees have undergone training to hone their skills,” the TAMWA statement said.

The Samia Kalamu Awards have been inaugurated in honour of the country’s first woman president in this great East African nation.

The awards, beginning this November 2024, are divided into three groups: Special national award, Award to media organisations and sectoral awards.
