President Samia Suluhu Hassan has sent a congratulatory message to her newly-elected Namibian female countetpart, Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah.

Nandi Ndaitwah, a staunch member of the ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), won the Namibian presidency during the November 27 general election to become the countr’y first female and fourth president.

In her brief congratulatory message sent yesterday to praise the Namibian leader’s election, President Samia promised to work together with the 72-year-old Nandi Ndaitwah to strengthen the existing friendly relations between the two countries.

Tanzania under founder president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere played a leading role during Namibia’s independence struggle against foreign domination.

The Namibian president, who is Africa’s fourth female to hold such powerful position, is a product of the liberation struggle when she joined SWAPO at a young age in the 1960s.

Apart from staying in Tanzania as an anti-colonial activist, she served her country as a High Commissioner after independence in 1990.

Tanzania — then Africa’s seat of anti- colonial movements — is highly respected by southern Africa countries — Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa, Angola and Zimbabwe — for supporting liberation movements in those countries during the 1960s and 70.
