The Mining Commission has inspected 13, 279 mining sites in the country between July last year and March this year as part of reinforcing safety at the workplace, it has been disclosed.
The inspection covered seven major mining locations, 46 middle-level and 13,226 small mining sites, and 164 dynamite places, the Mining Commission Director of Lincensing Department, Eng. Aziza Swedi, said in Mwanza yesterday.
She told a session of mining stakeholders that the inspections have strengthened the mining industry and facilitated collection of government revenue.
She said inspection goes into record as one of the major achievements of the Ministry of Minerals contributing to government revenue collection.
Inspectors were reminded to adhere to the Mining Act in the execution of their duties and to provide education to artisanal miners on health and safety measures at the workplace, observe environmental conservation, and the safe use of dynamite to avoid accidents.
Speaking at the same occasion, the Director of Mining and Environmental Audit, Eng. Hamisi Kamando, the session was aimed at capacity building for the miners as the backbone of the mining industry.
He said without protecting the welfare of miners, government will not succeed its target in revenue collection.
He underscored the role of conducting inspections as crucial at the workplace or else failure could lead to suspension of mining operations.
