The newly-built three-kilometers Kigongo-Busisi bridge will not only ease transportation services across the area, but will also boost the economy of Lake Zone regions and countries in the Great Lakes Region, a cabinet minister has said.

Works minister Abdallah Ulega said in Mwanza on Monday that the over 700bn/- bridge project, named JP Magufuli, is a landmark scheme in Tanzania and East Africa as whole, which highlights achievements made by the four-year government of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

President Samia inherited the project from her predecessor, the late President John Magufuli, when its implementation had reached 5 per cent in 2021.

With a capacity of accommodating 20,0000 vehicles a day, the bridge is planned for inauguration by President Samia on Thursday June 19.

Highlighting achievements made under Sixth Phase Government, Ulega said there has been a remarkable increase of the road network served by the Tanzania Roads Agency (TAN-ROADS) from 36,361.95 kilometers to 37,435.04 kilometers in the past four years.

He said 15,511 kilometers are still under various stages of construction while eight bridges have been completed and 12 others are under construction countrywide.

The minister said efforts were being made to decongest traffic in such cities as Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mwanza and Mbeya to ease travel for residents in such cities.
