Inspector-General of Police Camillius Wambura yesterday inaugurated a building housing the Gender and Children’s Desk of the police force in Tarime district in Mara region.
The building is a result of team work by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA),through the Tanzania Gender Networking Programme (TGNP) with funding from the Finnish government under the ‘My Choice, My Right’ programme.
The police chief thanked President Samia Suluhu Hassan for good diplomatic relations with other nations, including Finland.
“This building will be a safe place for victims of gender violence,” Wambura said, at the same praising UNFPA, TGNP and the Tarime-Rorya Police Commander, Mark Njera, for close supervision of the construction of the building.
He appealed to the public to join the fight against gender violence – including efforts to weed out the out-dated custom of female circumcision – saying it was not only the responsibility of the family but also for the whole community at large.
For his part, the head of commission responsible for community welfare, Faustine Shilogile, said the opening of the building was preceded with public education on the dangers of gender violence in 60 wards of the Tarime-Rorya police special zone.
UNFPA’s Dr Majaliwa Marwa said the construction of the building was in line with government and stakeholders’ determination to eliminate acts of gender violence and harassment.
According to TGNP coordinator Flora Ndaba, the project’s construction cost was 300m/- while another building was also built in Zanzibar.
