President Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday appealed to the society to cooperate in taking care and helping children with special needs.
Speaking at the climax of a charity event held at the Bagamoyo Diaconic Lutheran Centre and organised by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania, the president said disabled children should not be hidden or isolated with the community but should also be treated with ultimate care like other normal children.
The president pledged cooperation with various stakeholders, including church leaders, to ensure the availability of all needs for the disabled children.
She castigated out-dated customs that hinder the development of vulnerable children in the mainstream development process of the country.
Hiding and isolating children with special needs was a communal anathema and should not be condoned in a community of civilised people.
Speaking at the same occasion, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania Archbishop Alex Malasusa thanked the existing harmonious relations between the government, the private sector and the public in building a cohesive and inclusive community.
He praised the president for her love and cooperation in raising children morally and spiritually.
