The Global Communities, through its Pamoja Tuwalishe programme being undertaken in Tarime and Serengeti districts in Mara region has conducted four-day training to farmer facilitator volunteers to equip them with modern farming practices.

The training seeks to impart necessary skills to the recipients in crop husbandry instead of relying on agricultural extensions officers who have vast areas to cover in overseeing farming activities at once.

On the other side, community facilitators for groups of savings and credit societies in the twin districts also underwent a week’s training to help parents earn incomes for improving the welfare of their children while at school and at home.

The two training sessions were conducted at different venues in Tarime district with principal facilitators being Community Development Officer Hillary Dashina, Agricultural expert, Dr Amithay Kahanda, Community Facilitator Officer Emmanuel Shukia, Sospeter Mgunda from Global Communities and a digital facilitator expert, Salah Mwaitende, from Jumsa Clubs company.

Two district agricultural officers, Cosmas Karumuna and Fulment Laurent of Serengeti and Tarime districts respectively, attended the two training programmes, using the opportunity to thank the Pamoja Tuwalishe projects for helping government efforts towards increased agricultural productivity.

‘’The training will enable the recipients to become ambassadors of other farmers in the villages who did get this opportunity to learn the intricacies of modern ways of farming,’’ Laurent said.

The group of 40 men and women who attended the training will go into the villages to spread the knowledge gained to other farmers.

The trained farmer volunteers are expected to lead the establishment of demonstration farms planted with maize, beans and sunflower under the Rick Steve II of the Pamoja Tuwalishe Programme.

Two beneficiaries of the training -- Damali Nyahili and her colleague Paulina Mwita – were upbeat, saying the training would liberate farmers from the out-dated farming methods in the sister districts of Serengeti and Tarime.

“The training is a new beginning for us who have been practising farming in the olden ways. We’re now moving to adopting modern farming technologies,’’ said Nyahili.

Global Communities is non-profit organisation implementing the Pamoja Tuwalishe programme, a community-led school feeding model supporting schools and communities to operationalize the National School Feeding Guidelines (NSFG) in support of the government priority to improve learning outcomes and childhood nutrition.

The programme with headquarters in Dodoma operates in the twin regions of Dodoma and Mara.
