National Environmental Management Council of Tanzania ( NEMC) starts a countrywide crackdown on noise pollution at residential areas today, a move set to affect entertainment spots, including bars, recreation halls and even houses of worship.

In a warning to the public, NEMC Director General Dr Samwel Gwamaka said anyone who would be found flouting the directive on noise pollution would be forced to close their business for 30 days in order to install sound proof devices. The business licence will be revoked thereafter if that grace period expires with no appropriate action taken.

The crackdown follows a directive issued by Parliament last month, in which Deputy Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu tasked the Office of the Vice President, Union and Environment, through the NEMC to curb noise pollution generated by deafening music at residential areas, and mete out severe penalties to the perpetrators, saying it was detrimental and hazardous to the health of many, especially the elderly.
