An artisanal miner at the Marera mining in Tarime district, Mara region, is reported to have died inside the pit on June 8 this year, reports from Kegonga village say.

The victim, who it is reported, was trying to come out of the pit but failed to do so, was identified as Msabi Marwa Msabi, a resident of Kegonga village in Nyanungu ward.

The body of the deceased, the sources said yesterday, was buried on Saturday at his home village.

Kerende village chairman, Muniko Magabe, told Lake Zone Watch that Msabi died while he was struggling to come out of the pit, but couldn’t explain whether or not there were other miners around to rescue him.

This is the second incident recently to happen at the said mining centre, Magabe said.“I call upon smallholder miners to take safety precautions in their quest of seeking underground riches in the mining industry,” he said.

Tarime/Rorya zonal police commander ACP Michael Njera was not available for comment.
