A state-of-the-art kidney transplant centre, the only of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa, will be built at the Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma following the signing of an agreement in Osaka between the governments of Tanzania and Japan.
The project, whose signing ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Monday, would begin this year.
The more than 28bn/- centre will be a product of a tripartite partnership between Toku Kuchokai Medicine of Japan, Benjamin Mkapa Hospital and the University of Dodoma.
Signing of the agreement coincided with the Expo 2025 in Osaka, an international event where Tanzanian businessmen and investors took part.
Benjamin Mkapa Hospital Chief Executive Officer, Prof Abel Makubi, said the agreement was an outcome of Japanese doctors who have been helping healthcare projects at his modern hospital.
“These are our long-term stakeholders and were the first people who have been supporting the dialysis service at our hospital,” he said.
He said the Tanzanian government will facilitate construction of the kidney centre project to ensure it is completed within the next three years as scheduled.
Upon completion, the centre will offer training on kidney transplant and also carry out studies on kidney-related diseases, Prof Makubi explained.
On his part, University of Dodoma Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lugano Kusiluka, said his institution will launch a medical engineering programme to repair medical tools locally instead of hiring foreign experts in order to minimise costs.
