Stakeholders in the mining industry in Geita region say they are contented with the way the government has taken deliberate measures towards its transformation.

At a symposium held at Katoro town last week, hundreds of small-scale miners heaped praise on President Samia Suluhu Hassan, saying that during her four years in power she has developed mining as a major contributor to the national economy.

The Minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, attended the symposium where the miners staged a peaceful procession to thank government for the various reforms undertaken in the mining sector.

The minister informed the miners that under President Samia’s stewardship, the mining sector has recorded enviable growth leading to its contribution of 10.1 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product.

He said some of the measures taken to boost mining include the central bank buying gold to stablise the foreign currency reserves, issuance of licences to artisanal miners and procurement of equipment to empower them.

Minister Mavunde also announced that the Katoro mini gold market will now assume a full gold market status to pave the way for gold traders to sell their product without hindrances.

Speaking at the same symposium, Geita Regional Commissioner, Martine Shigella, promised the creation of an enabling environment for the gold trade to flourish.
He said issuance of licences to 5,308 artisanal miners will in fact lead to increased revenue collection.

The president of the Federation of Mining Associations of Tanzania (FEMATA), John Bina, praised the government for crafting strategies to improve mining in the country.
