The newly-constituted Governing Council of the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) has officially been inaugurated to carry out its activities.
The council's inaugural ceremony was held today Monday in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, and attended by prominent African academicians.

Tanzanian renowned a academic and geologist, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, who relayed this information to Mara Online, was one of the attendees in his capacity as the AAS Vice President of the Eastern Africa Region.
Other AAS leaders at the ceremony were AAS President Prof Friday Okonofua of Nigeria, Secretary General Prof Francine Ntoumi (Congo Brazzaville), Treasurer Prof Stephen Agong (Kenya), Vice President of the Southern African Region, Prof Kenneth Ozoemena, Vice President of the Central African Region, Prof Felix Toteu, Vice President of the Western Africa Region, Prof Balla Diop Ngom, and Prof Rajaa Cherjaoui of the Northern Africa Region.

Prof Muhongo's mandate covers such 14 countries as Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.
