More than five trillion shillings have been spent on procurement of services and various commodities in mining centres across the country as part of the implementation of the local content policy in the mining sector.
Previously, this amount of money would have found its way into the hands of foreign companies while under the local content policy, it remains in the hands of Tanzanian businesspeople, contractors and service providers.
Opening a minerals conference at the 50th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF) yesterday (Wednesday), Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr Steven Kiruswa, said the achievements are a result of strict supervision by the Tanzania Mining Commission in collaboration with big mining companies in ensuring that priority is given to locally-registered companies owned and managed by Tanzanians.
Statistics on procurement in mining centres show that the said money is directed to Engineering and Construction, Contracts on mining infrastructure development and roads, Energy and Oil and Distribution of Oil (diesel) for running the machinery, Dr Kiruswa said.

Dr Kiruswa urged the private sector and financial institutions to continue building the financial and technical capacity of the local entrepreneurs, particularly the procurement of heavy machinery and spare parts.
