Mara region’s 58.9-ton gold output brings in 6.9trn/-

Mara region has in past four years produced 58.9 tons of gold worth 6.9trn/- under the President Samia Suluhu Hassan government, it has been disclosed.

The mineral proceeds are from small-scale miners, medium and large mining firms operating in Mara region, the Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, revealed yesterday during a conference and mineral exhibition held in Musoma.

Mara region boasts of the giant Barrick North Mara Gold Mine which has a greater contribution to government revenue and funding of community-based projects in nearby villages in Tarime district.

Mara Regional Commissioner, Evans Mtambi, promised that such a conference to deliberate on the contribution of the mineral sector in the region’s development would continue to be held year-after-year to raise the contribution of the industry to 18 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product.

Stakeholders who attended the conference and exhibition praised President Samia for uplifting the  mining sector through the creation of an enabling environment for investment and supporting artisanal miners.

Under President Samia, the  budget of the Ministry of Minerals has risen from 89bn/- in 2021/22 to the current 224bn/- as an incentive of conducting various activities which include procurement of modern mining equipment and  mineral prospecting.
 
This has triggered the contribution of mining to the national economy to reach 10.1 per cent.
