
Prof Sospeter Mwijarubi Muhongo

Tanzania's renowned geologist, Prof Sospeter Mwijarubi Muhongo has been elected to serve on the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) Governing Council for the period 2026-2029 as Vice: President of Eastern Africa countries.
According to a brief press information released by his office yesterday, the Tanzanian academic scored 168 "Yes" votes as electronic election results while "No" and "Abstain" votes were 2 and 15 respectively.
Prof Muhongo is a distinguished world-class scholar, a chartered and a European earth scientist.
He holds a Dr.rer.nat. degree from the Technical University of Berlin, Germany.
He is a former Tanzanian Minister of Energy and Minerals, and a former President of the Geological Society of Africa.
Similarly, he is a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences.
He also combines as a Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of London, Honorary Fellow of the Geological Society of America, and a Honorary Research Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences.
The Tanzanian academic was the founding Regional Director of Africa for the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU).
Prof Muhongo is an Editor-in- Chief of the Journal of African Earth Sciences, Elsevier, and former Vice-President of the Commission of the Geological Map of the World (CGNW).
