President Samia launches East Africa’s mega bridge

President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Sunday began a one-week official tour of the neghbouring regions of Simiyu and Mwanza where she is scheduled to inaugurate various development projects.

The Lake Zone regions of Simiyu, Mwanza, Geita, Mara and Shinyanga, with the exception of Kagera, are famed for cotton growing and mineral wealth since the days of colonial rule when in 1940 diamonds were discovered at Mwadui in Shinyanga.

Simiyu Regional Commissioner, Kenani Kihongosi, said yesterday that President Samias itinerary includes inauguration of development projects in various economic sectors which include the newly-built offices of the state-run Tanzania Revenue Authority.

President Samia will on June 19 proceed to Mwanza region where she will inaugurate the multibillion-shilling Kigongo-Busisi Bridge, named JP Magufuli Bridge, a landmark scheme in Tanzania and East Africa to boost the economy of Lake Zone regions and countries of the Great Lakes Region.

Built at a cost of more than 700bn/-, the three-kilometre bridge will accommodate 20,000 vehicles a day and ease transport problems across the Kigongo-Busisi area on Lake Victoria.
