Tanzanians yesterday commemorated the 104th birth anniversary of founder president Mwalimu Julius Nyerere who died in October 14, 1999.

Nyerere, who was born on April 13, 1922, is revered in Tanzania for his courage and never-die spirit to fight for independence against British colonial rule.

He's also respected for spearheading southern Africa's liberation struggle against colonialism leading to the independence of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibian and Angola.

Nyerere is among Africa's elder statesmen who on May 25, 1963 formed the continental body, the Organisation of African Unity, now African Union.

Globally, Mwalimu Nyerere is also recognised for fighting for human rights and pushing for economic equality in developing countries of the south.

At home, Nyerere and Zanzibar's first president Abeid Karume united their sister countries -- Tanganyika and the Zanzibar archipelago -- to form the now 62-year-old United Republic of Tanzania.
