Keir Starmer resigns, with Andy Burnham confirming he'll stand to replace him

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting says he'll back Burnham's bid to become Labour leader and prime minister

Streeting - who quit Starmer's government last month - had previously said he would stand in any leadership race

This contest appears to be over before it's begun, writes the BBC's Henry Zeffman

Speaking outside No 10 earlier, the PM gave an emotional speech. He thanked his wife and said he wanted to be the "best dad I can to my beautiful children"

What happens now? Starmer says he'll remain as PM until Labour chooses a new leader, which will happen by the time "Parliament returns in September" or sooner if the party gets behind one candidate and there's no contest.

Starmer's been in post for two years - his decision to step down means the UK will soon have its seventh prime minister since 2016.
