Minister for Water, Jumaa Aweso, has dissolved the management of the Mwanza Urban Water and Sanitation Authority (MWAUWASA) for administrative inefficiency in providing water services to Mwanza residents.

The minister arrived at the decision following his recent tour of the lakeside city where he was informed of the challenges of supplying safe drinking water to the population of the fast-growing city.

The water crisis, the minister discovered, stems from administrative weaknesses of the dissolved management team.

He told MWAUWASA workers that despite their authority being one among the best water utilities in the country, its performance in the eyes of the government and the public leaves much to be desired.

"Currently, I'm not satisfied with the performance of MWAUWASA, and you yourselves have admitted this. In my visit, I've discovered that a large percentage of the challenges facing your organisation are a result of poor administration," Aweso said.

He added that he has been issuing frequent directives to the MWAUWASA management on the importance of accountability and efficiency, "but I haven't seen any change."

"I'm dissolving the MWAUWASA management so that we can start afresh. We're constituting a new team of administrators in order to strengthen the performance and efficiency of the institution," he emphasised.

The new management team will have the responsibility to improve water services for Mwanza residents, the minister explained.

Speaking at the same meeting with MWAUWASA workers, the ministry's Permanent Secretary, Mwajuma Waziri, warned that government will not hesitate to take punitive action against irresponsible workers in their areas of jurisdiction countrywide.

"I want MWAUWASA workers to change. It's your accountability which will minimise the challenges that people face," she said.
