Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa yesterday formed a 14 man committee of traders and government officials whom he has given fourteen days to deliberate and give recommendations on what measures to take, for the country to have a profitable and friendly business environment.

Premier Majaliwa had to step in to resolve a simmering crisis pitting Kariakoo traders in Dar es Salaam against the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), which had resulted in the closure of shops for three consecutive days, thus causing losses to shoppers, shopkeepers and the government in terms of billions.

He ordered the TRA to halt a task force that had been formed to follow up on the traders’ tax compliance, saying it has been harassing people and gave a leeway to bribery.

The Prime Minister also banned the police from collecting any taxes from traders, warning that it was none of their business, and that their duty was to protect people and their properties against criminals.

Earlier on, the Prime Minister listened to the traders’ complaints against various authorities including TRA, the police and Ilala Municipality.

He was accompanied by Deputy Parliament Speaker Idd Azzan, ministers Dr Ashatu Kijaji,(Industries and Trade), Dr Mwigulu Nchemba (Finance and Planning) and Hamad Yusuf Masauni (Home Affairs).

Kariakoo is Tanzania’s largest business hub, serving customers from upcountry, the East African community, and other neighbouring countries. Its proximity to Dar port and Julius Nyerere International Airport gives it an edge over other shopping centres in the country.
