President Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed her deep grief on the sudden death of two persons in a plane crash that happened yesterday at the Nyerere National Park in Morogoro region.
A brief press statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communication said the president “is saddened by this accident and joins the bereaved families in this difficult period of mourning.”
The two persons died when a light aircraft they were travelling in crashed at Matambwe airstrip soon after take-off. The plane had four people on board, including the pilot.
A statement released yesterday by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) said the mishap occurred at around 11.30 a.m. when the victims were on the plane Cessina 182 with registration No. 5H-FZS, property of the Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS), an international conservation organisation with headquarters in Germany.
The victims were on a patrol mission of the vast national park, which has been designated by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as a World Heritage Site.
The statement identified the deceased as Bernard Shayo, a pilot with FZS and former worker of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and Aman Mpogolo. Two other persons, also injured in the accident, were flown to Dar es Salaam for specialised treatment.
Natural Resources and Tourism minister Mohamed Mchengerwa yesterday sent condolences to the bereaved families pleading government help in their burial arrangements.
