The 2023 Uhuru Torch Race leader, Abdalla Shaib Kaim, has officially launched a giant water scheme worth 999m/ at Nyangoto village in Nyamongo, Tarime district, to meet the rising demand of the precious liquid in rural villages located near North Mara Gold Mine.
The ambitious project is the brainchild of Barrick North Mara Gold Mine through its community social responsibility (CSR) programme.
Implementation of the project was supervised by the government through the Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) in Tarime district to supply safe, secure, and sufficient water to thousands of villagers.
Speaking on Thursday after inspecting the project’s infrastructure and perusing various documents, Kaim said he was satisfied with its implementation as it met quality standards and the value for money factor.
“After our thorough inspection of the infrastructure and documents, we are satisfied with implementation of this project. We congratulate our brothers at Barrick for helping us achieve this huge water project”, he said.
Eng. Malando Masheku, the RUWASA Manager in Tarime district, said the project supplies safe drinking water to 3,737 households with a combined population of 34,678 people. The piped water network passes through 21 centres in such villages as Nyangoto, Mjini Kati, Matongo, and Nyabichune , all bordering North Mara Gold Mine in Matongo ward.
“The major source of money for the implementation of this project is Barrick North Mara through its community social responsibility role,” Eng. Masheku told the Uhuru Torch Race leader, adding that “availability of clean water services is a major weapon for preventing water-borne diseases and improving people’s health.
The Mara Regional RUWASA Manager Tulinumpoki Mwakalukwa said the source of the Nyangoto water project is within the Barrick North Mara Gold Mine, where water from Mara River undergoes treatment before being pumped to a huge 300,000-litre tank for distribution to various centres.
He said RUWASA continues to educate the people on their role of guarding the infrastructure of the project towards its long-term sustainability.
He cautioned the villagers against destroying pipes, adding that they should be at the forefront in paying their bills so that the project continues to be beneficial to present and future generations.
He thanked government leaders and Barrick North Mara authorities for their cooperation in ensuring that villagers have access to clean water.
Similarly, Nyangoto villagers praised the government and Barrick North Mara in separate interviews for launching the water scheme in their area as it has lessened the burden of travelling long distances in search of the service.
