Tanzania today marked the 54th death anniversary of Zanzibar first president, Abeid Armani Karume, who was assassinated on April 7, 1972.

Karume led a team of revolutionaries on January 12, 1964 to topple the then sultanate regime which had ruled the Zanzibar archipelago since the early 1840s.

He is revered for his zeal and unwavering commitment to bring justice and equitabke development to Zanzibaris.

It was Karume and the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, who mooted the idea of uniting the sister countries of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to form the 62-year-old United Republic of Tanzania on April 26, 1964.

As an energetic mass mobiliser, Karume is credited to have launched a major housing scheme for the poor in the twin islands of Zanzibar and Pemba.
