A non-governmental organization in Mara region, the network of Nyancha groups of farmers and livestock keepers (MVIWANYA), has enabled the Nyantare-Bungurere group to plant 250 trees as part of marking this year's World Environment Day.

The tree-planting campaign took place at the weekend at Muriba ward of the Tarime District Council.

Nyantare-Bungurere group members (farmers and livestock keepers) thanked MVIWANYA leaders for their support and promised to ensure that the planted trees would be looked after to boost environmental conservation in the area.

"We'll make sure that these trees grow as we urge the community to develop a culture of preserving the environment," said Maria Wambura, the Nyantare-Bungurere group secretary.

On his part, the group's chairman, Kerambo Chacha, underscored the importance of environmental preservation as the world faces the threat of climate change.

"MVIWANYA should not lose heart and instead should continue bringing us more tree seedlings as the threat of climate change is real. We want also to conserve our land as the source of our wealth," he explained.

MVIWANYA works under the sponsorship of an international NGO, Vi Agroforestry, which campaigns for mixed farming and mobilises and educates farmers on climate change issues.
