President Samia Suluhu Hassan has said that results of the 2024/25 National Wildlife Census carried out countrywide have shown major achievements in the country's conservation efforts, proving that Tanzania is among wildlife-rich countries in the world.
The president urged the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism to enhance public education campaign on the importance of natural resource conservation to enable Tanzanians participate fully in protection of the national heritage for the benefit of current and future generations.
President Samia made this call on Friday at State House in Dar es Salaam wgen she received the 2024/25 National Wildlife Census Report from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism through the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI).
She thanked both the ministry and TAWIRI for the first time accomplishing the census exercise through 100 per cent local funding.
To make wildlife conservation sustainable, the president also urged the natural resources ministry to start building the educational capacity of Tanzanian children to enable them understand the Kiswahili names of the various wild animals in order to inculcate a culture of conservation while they are still young.
On her part, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji, told the president that the census, held after 10 years, is aimed at monitoring the wildlife population, dispersal, behaviour and welfare of the animals, and challenges affecting ecological systems of the tourism sector.
She said the census, held between September and October last year, shiwcased the ecistence if 28 wildlife species of small and big animals in various ecological systems.
Expected to be formally announced by the minister, the census results show a positive trend of conservation for the 10-year period, Dr Kijaji said.
