Tanzania has issued a firm stand for Africa to speed up mine sector development by investing in value-chain addition into its resources, instead of exporting raw minerals, saying it brings little productivity to the continent.

Minister for Minerals Antony Mavunde made the remarks while closing the Mining Investment Conference & Expo 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya on Wednesday, emphasizing that local mining processing is a significant pillar for building industrial economies, and that it is a significant aspect in world market competition.

“Africa cannot continue to export raw materials while importing finished goods. We must build capacity to process and add value to our minerals, said the minister.

In order to achieve this objective, Africa must invest in modern infrastructure, reliable energy and friendly policies to attract investment in mineral processing industry, the minister said.

On investment, Hon. Mavunde said having capital and technology in place was not enough, adding that a reliable environment to motivate investors was necessary .

He also laid emphasis on strong policies, transparency in business licence issuance and predictable tax policy systems.

Meanwhile, the minister has urged African governments to change their mindset and build a partnership in mining development sector, so as to minimize danger in mega projects, help provide capital and improve infrastructure.

In strengthening competition, the minister suggested the need for zonal cooperation, stating that Africa would be stronger if countries would pool resources and build collective systems of mineral processing and markets.

On community welfare, the minister reminded Africa that a successful mineral sector goes hand in hand with the wellbeing of the community, through employment, environmental safety and economic development of the surrounding mining areas.

The minister also said there is a high demand for strategic minerals, and Africa stands to benefit immensely if she will act quickly and decisively.

“It’s time Africa took joint measures to ensure its resources are beneficial to the people in order to make the continent a center of industries and modern economy,’’ said Minister Mavunde.
