Barrick North Mara Gold Mine has achieved a milestone after completing the implementation of 70 out of 103 new projects under its Community Social Responsibility (CSR) programme in surrounding villages.

The Tarime-based gold mine is operated by Barrick mining company in partnership with the government of Tanzania through Twiga Minerals.

Francis Uhadi, the mine's head of community relations said recently that 11 nearby villages have immensely benefited from the implementation of CSR projects in such social sectors as health, education, water, infrastructure development and support to emerging small-scale entrepreneurs.

Speaking at the launch of a complaint-resolution clinic, an event held at Mjini Kati in Nyamongo township, Uhadi said the CSR projects have been a catalyst in the development of villages around the mine.

The projects have transformed the lives of the communities near the mine, he emphasized.

Guest of honour at the launch of the complaint-resolution clinic, Tarime District Commissioner Major Edward Gowele, called for the timely completion of all earmarked strategic CSR projects.

These schemes include the envisaged construction of a gold market at Nyamongo township and a bus stand at Nyamwaga village.

"These strategic projects should be implemented in time to hasten development in our area," Major Gowele appealed.

Construction of the modern gold market and the bus stand is expected to begin soon.
